OPEN LETTER TO HON. AMINU WAZIRI TAMBUWAL: PLEASE DO NOT RUN FOR PRESIDENT

Editor's Note: This letter was written by Hamza Ahmad Gudaji, a Portharcourt based legal practitioner.

Sir, recall that in 2006 former Vice President Atiku Abubakar defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). That move stirred tremendous political excitement across the country but in the final analysis he scored less than 3 million votes in the 2007 presidential election. Your recent political trajectory is traveling the same course as that of Atiku in 2006/2007.

Clearly your defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has generated positive political current for the opposition party. Your tentative ambition to contest for the presidency is however a negative current, which could render the ultimate objective of taking power from the P.D.P unattainable.

Understandably, the exit of an influential and prominent political office holder (such as yourself) from a failed ruling party will make significant impact across the polity, but this must not be mistaken or misinterpreted as electoral clout or votes-potential capable of making you win a presidential election.

You will recall Malam Nuhu Ribadu’s political naivety in 2011, which in the final analysis also yielded less than 3 million votes. At that time, Ribadu was numerously advised to first contest the governorship of Adamawa State before taking a shot at the presidency.
In my personal opinion, Mr. Sam Nda Isaiah has a stronger chance at the presidency than you, talk-less of General Muhammadu Buhari.

In the light of the foregoing, you are therefore respectfully advised to be more politically scientific by settling for your original realistic ambition of contesting the governorship of Sokoto State which if you win, hopefully, will prepare and place you in a better position to vie for the presidency of the country in the near future.
